Sustainability Research

The Environmental Policy Center was established with the support of the Charles H. Revson Foundation in the year 2000. It was reinaugurated in 2013 as the Sustainability Research Center. The Center conducts research, publishes its findings, runs work groups and distributes its ideas and proposals to further awareness of environmental issues. The center directs its work both to policy makers and to the general public, and offers assistance in the form of information and recommendations for the implementation of policy stemming form its research.
The Center's work is directed by a steering committee whose members include representatives of various bodies engaged in environmental matters.

Project Coordinator: Galit Raz Dror

The Environmental  Policy Center promotes research concerning the conservation of natural resources and their sustainable use.  Its work on environmental indicators provides basic information on resources accompanied by an assessment of past trends and future directions. Specific projects have provided insights into the management of various resources.

Impacts on environmental resources will largely be determined by the activities of economic sectors, driven by the overall state of the economy and household consumption patterns.  The drivers in the past were strongly linked to industrial and agricultural production, but today household consumption has overtaken them as the major driver behind increases in electricity demand, rising travel and transport pressures and the purchase of household appliances, with consequent impacts on water demand, fuel combustion and waste generation.

Setting the agenda for environmental policy requires the identification of key issues, which may arise from the need for a response to current events and conditions, to processes and trends and to harnessing possible future opportunities and minimizing risks.

Effective policy requires giving due consideration to alternative or complementary instruments for its implementation, through regulatory 'command and control', market mechanisms, or through informational and institutional channels. Research at EPC has provided a range of documents on indicators, compliance, non compliance and enforcement and on the management of risks and conflicts.
