Leading Israel into a sustainable future
This edition of JIIS Bulletin is dedicated to our major project, “Sustainability Outlook 2030 for Israel.” The first stage of the project was concluded recently with a string of recommendations on how to prepare Israel for a sound and sustainable future. “Inherent in those recommendations is an attempt to change the way decision makers think,” says Valerie Brachya, the project leader and until recently the director of JIIS’ Environmental Policy Center (EPC). “We hope that the outcomes of Outlook 2030 will provide a common agenda for stakeholders and will be adopted by them in the context of long-term strategic thinking, and that it will provide a framework for cooperation and consensus-building between sectors, in order to build together a sustainable future.”

The project focused on Israel but also addressed it as a case study; thus, the recommendations can be adapted for other countries and situations as well. The two-year study, devised and conducted by the EPC and the Ministry of Environmental Protection, employed experts from a wide range of fields, all of whom contributed their knowledge, individually and jointly, to building the Outlook. And it covered a wide gamut of issues – economy, society, public policy, planning, ecology, energy and water. Here we address just three topics – long-term strategies, future scenarios and policy packages. The full report is available in Hebrew and the Executive Summary can be downloaded in English and Arabic
